It’s been a while since I’ve written anything about music purely for the love of it. As a writing exercise, and a way of sharing what I’ve been listening to, I decided to write about my 10 favorite songs of 2021 so far. If you want to listen along while you read, there are playlists for Spotify & Apple Music at the bottom with honourable mentions that didn’t make the top 10. Enjoy!

Traphouse Bbymutha feat. Anakin Fly

Bbymutha is the best rapper that you are currently not listening to–unacceptable. She bends words to her will, using her syrupy Tennessee accent to stretch and…

On their debut mixtape, FOREVATIRED invite you to step into their world for a genre-defying experience that pushes their sound into new and exciting territory.

Although 2020 has been a year of incessant chaos, stress, and anxiety, it has also been a year of incredible artistic output from artists around the world. Nigeria’s music scene continues to thrive on a global scale despite every effort from COVID-19 to put life on pause. FOREVATIRED, the eclectic alternative/rap collective currently based in Lagos have built a cult following through a steady release of demo tapes and singles from 2018 till now. With their debut mixtape THOSE KIDS NEXT DOOR, the collective’s colourful vision feels brighter and bolder than ever. …

On the 28th of September, 2019, Olaniyi Oloke, also known as YCG, released Homewrecker 2.0, his 4th EP in 3 years. The 21 year old rapper is representative of a generation that has the haziest recollection of a life before the internet, if any at all. As a true online native, YCG has worked tirelessly to learn and develop every aspect of his artistic craft. …

Beyoncé has long been seen as the standard-bearer for excellence in her craft as both musician and performer. Her longevity and growth in cultural relevance throughout her career is a testament to both an unparalleled work ethic and a desire to learn, grow, and examine parts of herself as well as bigger themes like motherhood and her identity as a black woman. One theme that has been prevalent in both her music and visuals over the course of this past decade has been a growing relationship with African culture through fashion, music, and videography. Beyoncé admitted to being heavily inspired…

For years, Jaden Smith has been a public figure ripe for consumption in the digital age. At times more meme than man, his cryptic tweets, strange outfits, and all-around persona were perfect fodder to be gawked at and shared across your timeline. In presenting himself this way, he managed to carve an identity separate from his uber-famous family name. He wasn’t Jaden Smith, heir to the Smith Family Entertainment Empire, he was simply Jaden. Then he got to work.

Jaden’s second studio album, ERYS, was released 3 days before his 21st birthday. In his first 20 years of life he…

“Santi’s ‘Mandy & The Jungle’ is a deep dive into the world of the reclusive artist. His emotional honesty reveals a new side of him, while making music perfectly suited to soundtrack the next ten summers.”

For the past two years, there have been rumblings across social media, distressed cries from disgruntled fans. London, Lagos, Tokyo, Toronto, it didn’t matter, people around the globe united in their clamoring for an album from Santi, Nigeria’s newest star. Santi utilises social media sparingly compared to many of his musical peers. He provides a slow drip of visuals and singles, we see shaky fan videos of him shaking his dreads like a lion’s mane on Twitter, but he never fully feels present. Of course this is all by design, a meticulous process all designed to build up to the…

In the realm of the Zodiac and astrology, the Gemini is associated with duality. While some perceive this duality as a representation of split personalities, others view it as the divide between how the Gemini would like to be viewed and how they perceive themselves. Duality is a major theme in the sensational neo-pop album ‘Gemini’, the Soulection debut from budding star Tay Iwar. From the dual-sided artwork that represents the dark and light sides of Tay’s personality, to the lyrics that constantly portray Tay in different lights, Gemini is a fascinating character study packaged in pop sounds so lush…

Rap is half sport, half entertainment. As listeners we love being thrilled by dizzying displays of technical ability merged with megawatt personalities. We have established veterans that oversee the game, mythical legends that we place upon “Top 5” pedestals, and young upstarts that are vying to become rap’s next star. In 2019, the field of upstarts is as crowded as ever, with loads of young rappers making great music. Of course a few rappers always manage to outshine their peers setting themselves apart as true stars. …

A lot of rappers claim not to give a fuck. They snarl and posture, wanting, even needing us to believe that they’re tough. They bark and they’re brash in hopes of us buying into their image. We play along if the music is fire, turning a blind eye to that quivering lip when they snarl or ignoring the shakiness in that bark. We hear these rappers and even if we don’t believe them, it’s alright. Blaqbonez is not one of those rappers.

The young Nigerian rapper recently released ‘Bad Boy Blaq Re-Up’ a supplementary album to his 2018 album ‘Bad…

Spending time in your own head can be very valuable. It is a way to assess and reflect upon our actions. Spending time in our heads can help us become more attuned with our emotions, allowing us to be alert to situations that might disrupt our peace of mind. As with all things, too much time within ourselves can lead to isolation from the world around us and the people we love. What happens when we’re so comfortable with our own thoughts that we start to neglect those nearest to us? What happens when the comfort ceases but we don’t…
